Camp Weaver
Students from Weaver High School participated in a camp aimed to help prepare this year's incoming 7th grade students. The 2 day event was a major success!

Calhoun County Partners with Jacksonville State University
Calhoun County Schools is preparing to partner with Jacksonville State University in outdoor lab project.

The school system owns land adjacent to its career technology center. The land is a relatively undisturbed piece on property loaded with more than 200 species. The school system plans periodically hold science classes on the 7 acre lot with assistance from professors from JSU.

The stakeholders hope to iron out the logistics in time to have high school students studying the land in time for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Joseph Dyar was selected to receive a $1000, for Calhoun County Schools, while at the Alabama Association of School Boards conference.

Congratulations to Mr. John Adcock and Mr. Jack Stewart on their induction into the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame.

John Adcock, former Wellborn High School Coach, University of Alabama basketball player, All-State performer is a 2012 Class Inductee to the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Adcock served 20 years at Wellborn. Congratulations to John Adcock for your outstanding achievement!

Jack Stewart, former Saks High School Coach, 2012 Class Inductee for the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Stewart lead 12 Saks High School Teams and had a collective record of 70-40-4. Additionally Coach Stewart took the Saks Wildcats through their first undefeated season in 1968. Congratulations to Jack Steward for your exceptional accomplishment!

Wellborn Elementary
Wellborn Elementary Outdoor Classroom
Wellborn Elementary outdoor classroom has been certified as a "Nature Explore" classroom by the National Arbor Day Foundation. It will be the first Nature Explore classroom located in Alabama. The Arbor Day Foundation will have a news release on June 14th, and will have a recognition at the County Commission on that date.

Pigskin Roundup - Spring Jam
Wellborn High School hosted the first ever Pigskin Roundup at Jacksonville State's Burgess Snow Field. Seven teams from Calhoun County School system as well as Donoho High School participated in the two day event. TV24 will air the games Tuesday May 22nd. Kids Fishing Classic
Kids Invitational Fishing Classic
The Kids Invitational Classic was held on May 3rd at Oxford Lake. The event consisted of 194 students from classrooms serving intellectual developmental disabilities throughout Calhoun and Cleburne counties.

The Kids Fishing Committee consists of staff from The Alabama Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Calhoun County Commission, Calhoun County Extension Service, Calhoun County 911 EMA, Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties, City of Oxford/Oxford PARD, Ogle Sign and a host of volunteers.

Prizes were distributed to individual students in both divisions who caught the most and biggest fish.

Calhoun County Schools is partnering with Jacksonville State University in a program called TransitionU. TransitionU will allow pre-vocational students from Alexandria and Wellborn High schools to gain access to the college campus as well allowing Jacksonville State students the opportunity to train and learn alongside our students.   TV24 Video

YMCA - Strong Kids Campaign
Calhoun County Schools partnered with the YMCA Strong Kids “Plant the Seed” 2012 Campaign, for the purpose of helping the children in the school system. The campaign recently ended with a “Victory Luncheon” at the YMCA in Downtown Anniston. Calhoun County fourth-graders celebrated their 12th annual Earth Day. The event is sponsored each year by the Calhoun County Extension Office and many area agencies. Activities took place at Cane Creek Gardens at McClellan, where students were rotated through stations learning about the environment.   TV24 Video

AASOP
2012 Alabama Association of School Office Personnel (AASOP) District V Luncheon
Alabama Association of School Office Personnel (AASOP) met on April 17 for their annual luncheon/meeting to honor district V's office personnel. Individuals from Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Dekalb, Etowah, St. Clair, and Talladega Counties were all represented in the meeting!

The members of this organization provide many services to the schools and strive (as an organization and part of their annual function) to provide 2 or 3 $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from schools within District V (for which the candidates apply and winners are selected by the State AASOP scholarship committee).

Congratulations to Lisa Hood and Brandy Russell from Weaver Elementary. These ladies will participate in the Alex Podcast Camp on April 26th at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama. Students Against Destructive Decisions - Saks High School
A group of students from the Saks High School chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions spent the day in Montgomery. They joined volunteers from the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart/Stroke Association, and Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Alabama. This event is in advance of Kick Butts Day on March 21. It was created by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to teach young people to stand out, speak up, and seize control against Big Tobacco.   Tv24 Video

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad - Saks Middle
Science Olympiad competition was held at Jacksonville High School on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Saks Middle had 24 students compete in 28 events ranging from science knowledge to thinking and building skills. 30 teams entered the competition from multiple counties, public and private schools. Saks placed 10th place overall.

Wilbur Wood
Mr. Wilbur Wood - Transportation South Caring Driver Award
Mr. Wilbur Wood, a Calhoun County bus driver for the Saks schools, recently won special recognition for being a caring bus driver by Transportation South. Transportation South honored drivers throughout Alabama for being drivers recognized by their school systems for being a caring driver of students. Mr. Wood was nominated by the principals of Saks Elementary, Saks Middle and Saks High School for this honor. The Calhoun County School System is proud of Mr. Wilbur Wood and the services he provides to our students. We are also proud of all our drivers that make caring of students a goal each time they run their routes. Transportation South honored Mr. Wood at a special luncheon in Birmingham on February 14th.

Savannah Gardner
Savannah Gardner - Alexandria High School
Senior Savannah Gardner has been our Girls Basketball manager for several years now and has played for the Lakeshore Lakers, a Wheelchair basketball team for 7 years…she will play wheelchair basketball at UA in the Fall.

Friday night was Senior Night at AHS and Savannah, SGA Chaplain, arranged a wheelchair basketball demonstration for AHS. Savanna was determined and wrote a proposal to get the event rolling. 9 players and 2 coaches from her team came from all over Alabama for this demonstration. In addition Savannah arranged for several of her classmates that do not have disabilities to try their hand at the sport in a scrimmage with her team. It was amazing.

$30,000 Mobile Guidance Career Laboratory Grant
The new "Mobile Guidance Career Laboratory" at the Calhoun County Career Technical Center will be in full operation in January. This past summer, the $30,000 Mobile Guidance Career Laboratory Grant came available through the Alabama Department of Education. After receiving word from Karen Winn about this grant, Wayne Smart knew his counselor, Donna Nash, would be excited about this opportunity for the students of Calhoun County. He also knew this type of lab was something that she had been working on since 2006 when she opened the Career Center. He said, "Mrs. Nash came in during her off time in the summer to write the grant with the help of Naomi Williamson, Coop Coordinator, and the Tech Center bookkeeper, Miranda Waid." Mrs. Nash is presently working on the implementation of the Career Guidance Mobile Lab Grant that was recently awarded to the Calhoun County Career Technical Center in September.   TV 24 Video

Krista Young is leading the way for Student Credentials in the Med Prep program for Career Tech. The CERT credentialing has been approved by the State Department for the Med Prep program. Ohatchee Elementary
PreK Grant - Ohatchee Elementary
Ohatchee Elementary School was awarded a First Class Pre-Kindergarten grant from the Alabama Office of School Readiness for the 2011-12 school year. This grant is valued at $82,260 and will provide valuable preschool skills for the 18 students from the Ohatchee community that are participating in this voluntary program. The Pre-K lead teacher is Lynn Christopher and the Assistant teacher is Brandy Davis. The Pre-K playground at OES was completed in November, 2011. Funding for the playground was provided by a $10,000 donation from Senator Del Marsh

Saks Middle
ACEF Grant Recipients
A $70,000 grant has been awarded to Saks Middle School from Anniston Community Education Foundation for the Tools for Success Project. This is a two year grant that will be rewarded in two installments of $35,000. A previous grant was awarded to Saks Elementary School from Anniston Community Education Foundation which was used to fund the Kindergarten Waterford lab at Saks Elementary School.

Saks Elementary School improved their outdoor classroom when they built new planting boxes using funds from a grant awarded to SES from the Coosa Valley Resources, Conservation and Development Council. With the new boxes, the classes were able to plant and cultivate winter vegetables. They planted cabbage, radishes, broccoli, and turnip greens. Monday, November 07, 2011, the Second Grade classes picked the turnip greens for part of Tuesday’s lunch. Mrs. NeSmith will clean, prepare and cook the greens so that the students can taste their hard work.   View Slideshow
