Event: White Plains Golf Team - Runner UP at State Tournament - 05/23/2013

TV24 Article

The White Plains boys golf team took the state’s runner up trophy last week in Muscle Shoals. The hardware marked the
first state trophy at White Plains High School in any sport. Calhoun County Superintendent Joe Dyar was on hand Tuesday
as the school held a luncheon to honor the boys and girls teams. Golf coach Marcus Harrell says the guy’s willingness
to prepare to win was a big factor in their success.

Things are good presently and looking great for the future. All of the qualifiers for the state championship this year are
underclassmen and will all be back for next season. The athletes say the lessons they learned through this season will help
them perform better on the big stage next year. They hope they will return to the state championship and claim another
history-making trophy- the blue one.

One individual honor of note, sophomore Dustin Travis learned Monday that he is one of ten golfers named to the 3A All-State Team.

Event: Calhoun County Lego Robotic Teams - 04/18/2013

Letter By: John Moore
Calhoun County Gifted Program

I am overjoyed, amazed, and incredibly proud of our Lego robotics teams! This past Saturday, April 6th, four county teams traveled to the University of Alabama to compete in the Alabama Robotics Competition. I couldn’t have been more impressed with any group of students. Not only did they accept the challenge of solving the three separate missions provided, but all team members demonstrated the utmost class and spirit of sportsmanship as they worked together to find solutions to their problems.

A huge congratulation goes out to the White Plains team! They not only achieved a perfect score, but were the only elementary team in the competition to accomplish that feat. This allowed them to go on to win 1st place in the elementary division and therefore represent their school/county on the state level. Great job guys!!

In addition to this success, I was inspired. Inspired by the way each of the separate county teams worked together and provided support for each other. Over the past six weeks, these students have grown accustomed to helping each other during practice sessions. This turned out to be a good thing on competition day. Rules of the competition required that Teachers/coaches/parents not intervene with the teams as they were working. We were strongly discouraged from helping or intervening with the students as they were required to build, program, troubleshoot, and manage on their own. However, they were not restricted in helping each other! It was truly a joy to watch as the following things happened: Pleasant Valley (who had immediate success with the first obstacle) shared a programming textbook with the White Plains team. Next, Weaver Elementary shared their extra computer with Alexandria who were having difficulties getting their computer to recognize their robot. Weaver probably had the most difficulty with their computer, robot, and sensors. The overwhelming difficulties they faced caused them to be delayed in starting the missions. At one point, I saw all the schools sharing computers, robots, parts, and knowledge in order to help Calhoun County be successful. In many cases, it worked!

Pleasant Valley had an additional problem. This team scored 250 points…. This would have been enough to win 2nd place in the elementary division if it were not for the age group divisions. All team members had to be in the 5th grade or lower to compete in the elementary division. (They had one 6th grader…) This forced them to compete in the 6th through 8th divisions. It was a tough break for them, but they still managed a 5th place finish in the middle school division! Weaver and Alexandria, despite their setbacks, persevered and were able to find success with the time they had left. In the end, all the students left with an increased knowledge of computer/robotic programming, the experience of dealing with pressures in a competitive setting, and the pride of representing their county at the state level.

I cannot say enough how proud I am of these students! These kids (and their parents), came to numerous Friday evening practice sessions and used their own time, money, and vehicles to drive to the University of Alabama this past Saturday. I am greatly appreciative of all the support we received throughout the past six weeks and am looking forward to future success as we head back to Tuscaloosa next year! I am currently working on an article for the Anniston Star. If you know of a contact at the Anniston Star that can help, please let me know.

The following team members should be congratulated for their success at this competition:

I am so pleased to congratulate these schools on achieving the Gold Award of Distinction in the HealthierUS School Challenge. This Challenge is a cornerstone of the Let's Move! Initiative, an ambitious initiative to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Our schools are on the frontlines in this effort and your participation in the HealthierUS School Challenge is fundamental to helping solve the problem of childhood obesity.

As a winner of the Gold Award of Distinction, these schools are among the very best of the best - going above and beyond the minimum requirements to help ensure your students live full and active lives. The environment you and your team have created through education, nutritious food and beverage choices, and opportunities for physical activity will help your students learn how to make healthy choices now and for years to come. This is an extraordina1y accomplishment, and you should all be incredibly proud of what you have achieved. As leaders in this effort, I hope you will reach out to other schools and offer your expertise and advice to help them reach for the gold as well.

Our strength as a Nation and our ability to responsibly shape our future depends on tackling childhood obesity, and I am inspired by the work you are all doing to help realize the promise of a brighter, healthier tomorrow for our children.

Event: Alexandria High - Shaun Winn 4-H Hall of Fame - 03/20/2013

Article used from 4-H Hall of Fame booklet

During the 1990’s, when you walked into the Alexandria fifth grade hall on 4-H Day, you knew something was up! The students were excited, there were 4-H contest entries on the counter in every classroom and there was usually the smell of food, especially on Egg Demonstration days. In the midst of all the 4-H excitement was Shaun Winn, the fifth grade science teacher.

During her 14 years as a 4-H volunteer, Shaun Winn inspired the students to be active in 4-H meetings, contest and leadership opportunities. Every fall, Winn and the other fifth-grade teachers would encourage students to campaign and vote for 4-H officers, before the first 4-H meeting, officers were trained by Winn, and then held a high standard during the 4-H meetings. They were also encouraged to attend the County 4-H council meetings and report back to the local club.

Ruth Sarro, Regional Extension Agent, who worked with Shaun Winn during that time, recalled introducing herself as a 4-H agent to an Alexandria Elementary administrator. “I don’t know what yo do in 4-H, but I know what Shaun Winn does in 4-H,” the staff member responded. The entire community knew the calue of 4-H through her efforts.

Nominated by Ruth Sarro, Regional Extension Agent.

http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/files/winn_4h.pdf

March 14 is recognized around the world as Pi Day. Math enthusiasts take a moment on 3/14 to celebrate the number 3.14…… Pi is an irrational number that can be calculated by taking any circle and dividing its circumference by its diameter.

At Alexandria, we celebrated in Mrs. Davis’ advanced math classes by enjoying a variety of pies as we were entertained by pi songs written and performed by students. Julianne Heany, a junior at AHS, wrote and performed her own song.

Julianne Heany has been a member of Alexandria High School Choirs since the 5th grade and has demonstrated her musical talent and leadership skills in every opportunity that comes her way. She has performed solos, and has been a member of Alabama All-State Chorus, and Alexandria Ensembles, as well. She is a consistent favorite at community and school events such as the annual Talent Show and Christmas in the Valley.
Given her level of musical talent and maturity at this young age, Julianne is assured a bright and promising future!

http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/indexmedia/misc/pi2013.cfm

But it wasn’t the only surprise the veteran band director has received recently.

Last month Inglis, who turns 63 today, was named the Alabama Music Educators Association music teacher of the year for his work as band director at Saks High School. Today, he plans to watch two of his children, who have also led marching and concert bands, direct Calhoun County’s Honor Bands.

Event: Med Prep Students participate in mock disaster drill - 01/30/2013

Med Prep was asked to participate in a community wide mock disaster drill at Jacksonville Medical Center in November. The students (all Med Prep seniors) were the "victims" of a tornado disaster. It was a great learning experience because they had to role play different scenarios (complete with fake wounds and blood) and see first-hand how hospitals handle an overflow of patients during a disaster.

Event: Salute to Board of Education - 01/18/2013

Salute to Board of Education
by The Anniston Star Editorial Board

Throughout January, schools across the state will salute more than 800 local school board members for Making a World of Difference in public education. As we celebrate Alabama’s 20th Annual School Board Member Recognition Month, we want to acknowledge the commitment and contributions of our own school board members as they face many challenges in 2013.

The board members who volunteer countless hours of their time are dedicated to our children, teachers, support personnel and the community as we strive to meet the challenges of improving public education and serving the best interests of both the students and the community at large. With eyes looking toward the future, they bring their experiences and expertise to the “public education table” and work diligently to prepare the children of Calhoun County Schools for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The future of each student and generation is directly impacted by the leadership and governance of our Board of Education members as they strive for equity and excellence so that each child may reach his or her greatest potential. It is their selfless commitment that helps make Calhoun County Schools extraordinary.

We encourage the local community to join us as we thank and honor Calhoun County Board of Education members: David Gilmore (president), Mike Almaroad (vice president), Tobi Burt, Dale Harbin, Debbie Hess, Phil Murphy and Jeff Winn.

Event: Calhoun County Schools to encourage students to bring electronics to class - 01/14/2013

Anniston Star Article
by Laura Johnson

White Plains Middle School teacher Angie Kelley is learning that technology gives her students more control over their own education.

No longer are students restricted to paper-and-pencil assignments. Now they can use video, email and other applications to show Kelley the concepts they’ve grasped in her language arts class.

“We don’t have to do it just paper-pencil style,” Kelley said. “It gives them a lot more say-so about how they express their learning in class.”

Kelley’s experience is not unique among teachers at White Plains Middle School, which last year became home to a pilot program that asks students to bring their own laptops, smartphones and tablet computers to school. Soon her experience with technology in the classroom will become more common among teachers who work for Calhoun County Schools.

This month the district is expanding the pilot program to five more schools, and by next fall to all county schools. The initiative, named “Bring Your Own Device,” is designed to help students and teachers integrate technology into classrooms, administrators said.

The initiative, known to teachers as BYOD, is an alternative to technology programs known as one-to-one initiatives, which provide each student with an Internet-capable device. Piedmont City Schools, for example, provide computers to all students in some grades. Under BYOD, the school system provides wireless Internet service, but the students provide the devices.

“We’re going to have a one-to-one initiative, but it’s going to be with the parents’ help,” said Calhoun County Deputy Superintendent Karen Winn. “We need our parents as partners in this.”

Preparing teachers and parents

To be sure parents understand the changes in their children’s classrooms, Calhoun County School administrators are holding a series of community meetings throughout the month of January. At the meetings parents and other stakeholders can learn which devices are best for the classroom and the school policies regarding the devices.

“We want to make sure we share our vision and goals with them,” said Calhoun County Superintendent Joe Dyar. “They may give us an idea we haven’t thought about.”

The school system is coupling the introduction of the program with on-site professional development for its educators. Because of the extensive nature of the professional development, the system is phasing the program in across the system, administrators said.

“We’re thinking big, but we’re starting small,” Winn said.

Communication between educators and parents is key to successfully implementing the program said White Plains Middle School Principal Courtney Wilburn, who oversaw the implementation of BYOD at her school.

“If you go ahead and let everybody know what we’re going to do, it really cuts down the questions,” Williams said.

Keying students in

In class, students at White Plains Middle use devices to do research on the Internet, complete homework, email teachers and give real-time responses in the classroom.

The privilege of having the devices is balanced with daily discussions about how to use technology responsibly. Additionally, the school system has a disciplinary policy that states the devices can be taken from students if they use them improperly, administrators said..

When the program began last year, administrators said they expected to have several of those discipline problems. But, they said, they have not had many problems..

Part of the reason educators say disciplinary calls are down at White Plains Middle is because technology is increasing “student engagement.” That means students are more likely to pay attention in class because they’re interested in the technology..

“They’re getting to use the devices and they don’t want to lose that privilege,” Kelley said..

Educators say that, because of technology, teachers are able to reach some students who have, in the past, been unresponsive.

“There are a lot of kids who will never raise their hand, but they’ll text,” said Lisa Amerson, the system’s technology director. “It breaks down those walls.”

The devices are also being viewed as a school supply. Before Christmas, parents began calling teachers and administrators to find out which type of device they should purchase for their students.

Eighty-seven percent of students can bring some type of device to school. For those who can’t the system lends its own laptops.

To bridge the gap for some students, the system purchased 52 Apple iPads for children who are considered homeless.

Having the devices in the classroom also gives teachers a chance to teach students something the administrators called “digital citizenship.” The idea, they said, is that by using the technology under adult supervision, students will learn how to use the devices responsibly.

Administrators say it’s a task that parents can help with, too.

“They have a very important role in teaching our students to use these devices responsibly,” Winn said. “Parents have to be a part of that.”

The school system plans a series of community meeting to discuss the programs. Details of the meetings will be published at Calhoun County Schools’ website: http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us

Pleasant Valley High School participated in the annual Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center Toy and Food Drive and brought in more than 1000 items ranging from basketballs to dolls to games. At the school-wide program on Wednesday, December 12th, drive totals were given and the high school band and choir performed. The Varsity and Jr. High Cheerleaders combined to perform, faculty members sang and played instruments, the drama class reenacted “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and the faculty participated in the “Ugly Sweater” contest. Mr. Proper, principal of PVHS, thanked students for their participation and reminded everyone how important it was to help others, especially those in need. One of the highlights of the program was led by Cody Fulmer and Wes Sears, who led members of the student body in a Christmas-style version of the music video Gangnam Style. The school’s yearbook staff organized the event.

http://www.consolpub.com/slideshows/jn/20121217pleasantvalley/

The White Christmas Program was started 48 years ago to help the underprivileged community members of Ohatchee. Each year students collect nonperishable food items during their first period class. These items are placed into boxes and divided for distribution. During the ceremony, which includes carols from our elementary grades and high school students, the items are marched into the gym to symbolize the giving spirit of the Christmas season. After the program, our SGA loads a bus, with the food, and delivers them to the families that need them.

http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/slideshows/oh%20white%20christmas/

Event: Rachel's Challenge - Pleasant Valley High - 11/08/2012

Rachel's Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and allay feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. The programs are based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were different, who were picked on by others, or who were new at her school. Shortly before her death she wrote

"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."

Rachel’s Challenge (5 Parts)
1. Look for the Best in Others
2. Dream Big
3. Choose Positive Influences
4. Speak with Kindness
5. Start Your Own Chain Reaction

http://www.calhoun.k12.al.us/slideshows/Rachel%27s%20Challenge%20PV/

Event: Key Leader - 09/13/2012

Students from Alexandria High and Ohatchee High participated in a Key Leader event for the Kiwanis Club. The girls were chosen to attend based upon their leadership positions in their respective clubs. The event was held at the Anniston Country Club. There, they had to present their experiences to the club, as Kiwanis is a sponsor of Key Club and helped fund the girl's fees for the trip. Our students represented Calhoun County schools extremely well by professionally presenting their knowledge of servant leadership and by exemplifying what a leader should be.

Congratulations to Mrs. Francis Shipp for receiving the 2012 "Making A Difference" Award!

"The positive impact so many of our coaches have made on the lives of our young people has helped mold many
into productive workers, outstanding parents and outstanding citizens. The life lessons taught by these men
and women who sacrifice so much each day to server as coaches can never fully be measured.
